In times of crisis our sensibility is the limit. So many attacks and external pressures to which we are subject to walk constantly on the verge of exasperation and intolerance. It’s easy to get distracted and lose sight of the real issues in a negotiation, but it is necessary to separate people from the problem to explore interests and invent options for mutual benefit among which to choose.

So What Do I Do?

Not rigidly hold its position, but firmly pursue and defend their interests. Make it a focus of satisfaction. Help the other negotiator to feel satisfied. Satisfaction means that their basic interests are satisfied. Do not confuse basic interests with positions: Their position is what he says he wants: his basic interest is what he really needs to get.

One way to understand the difference between positions and interests is the classic example of two sisters fighting over an orange. Both wanted the orange, so they had a great discussion, until finally cut it in half. A stripped his half sister, and use the peel to bake a cake. The other stripped his half, and ate the fruit. Finally finished a half-shell, and the other half fruit.

But if instead of looking at the orange one would have considered that he was interested in cooking and eating the other was interested, could well have ended with a shell for a whole, and whole fruit for the other. That is often what we do negotiate, eventually dividing the orange and we were less than we might have obtained.

Increasing your power and leadership in the negotiation is directly proportional to the development of an alternative, a good plan of action to follow to achieve its interests if it fails to reach an agreement. Your best alternative is to think you will do if it reaches agreement with that person. Never negotiate without options.

If you rely too much on the outcome of the negotiation, is losing its ability to say NO

Even within the social chaos that seems to demand immediate critical decisions, always keep perspective during their negotiations. It insists on getting an extra penny and lose sight of the central points of the negotiations, which are important to you. Always think: “What am I going to look like this within a year?”.
